A very exciting and brand new technique for Bunion surgery has come to the Boston area. Thanks to the company ArthrocareR who is an innovator in sports medicine and the forward thinking of Dr. Bregman this new procedure dramatically improves Bunion surgery.

This new procedure which is being called "The suture lasso" technique by Dr. Bregman eliminates the need for the traditional cutting of bone or osteotomy to correct the deformity. Instead of a 10-12 week recovery to return to full activity it is now an amazing 4-6 weeks!! This is less than half the time. Return to work can be in as little as 3 days!!

Using two small incisions the Bunion deformity is corrected using a very strong suture to "lasso" the second metatarsal then using special instrumentation from ArthrocareR called the Mini-Magnum implant the 1st Metatarsal is secured with the small implant, very similar to a dry wall screw. Once in place the implant will then allow the suture to be placed under tension using special equipment and the Bunion is pulled into the corrected position. Sometimes another procedure may be needed on the Big toe to complete the correction which will add a slightly longer recovery.

The benefits are: 1) Less swelling 2) Minimal scarring leading to better range of motion 3) Less discomfort after surgery (no pain) 4) Quicker return to work or sports

No longer should there be fear of pain or long recovery. You will be back in regular shoes in a few weeks!!

*Not all Bunions can be fixed by this technique some additional or other type of surgery may be needed but this can be determined in your initial consultation with Dr. Bregman who is the first Podiatric surgeon in Massachusetts to perform this technique.

This new procedure can now be done for cosmetic reasons even if you have no pain but have trouble getting into shoes because of the deformity. This is not covered by insurance for cosmetic reasons. Risks and complications still apply but are significantly less than the traditional method.
